History of Racism Film Screening

It's hard to understand racism without knowing the history behind it, and how those legacies have shaped Britain today.   

The university has produced two videos which explore the history of racism. The first will look at how slavery has shaped Sheffield and the second focusing on colonialism and the lasting effects of the British Empire.  

As part of the University’s commitment to race equality and creating an inclusive campus, academics from across the university share their insights and discuss themes of racism, immigration, the abolition of slavery and anti-racism resistance during these short films. 

The Model Minority Myth

The model minority myth is the external perception of achievement being higher within certain minority groups by those who do not identify with them. The myths perpetuated around minorities’ expected level of success can be extremely damaging as it is fostered both externally within the school system, through peer groups, and internally for any person from a minority group. 

In this interactive workshop we will explore the model minority myth in more detail and tackle internalised beliefs which have been unhealthily nurtured by exposure to it so we can view our successes in a more positive light.
